How can something so simple cause so much confusion? In this video we will cover a few simple tips and tricks to avoid excessive pulling, breakage or matting in your natural hair and extensions.
Crown Extension Studio became a reality in 2017 when extension specialist, Jenna Bowden, saw an ever-growing need for hair loss solutions in Colorado Springs. More and more women were coming in with thyroid issues, hair loss from stress and general breakage and inability to grow their hair past a certain point and were looking for answers.
She would always hear the same thing from new guests: that it was so hard for them to find a salon that specialized in extensions, and here is why: ⠀⠀⠀
– There were only individual stylists who did extensions – not a whole team. What if they went on vacation or they had a problem with their hair and their stylist wasn’t available?
– The stylists they found only did only one kind of extensions – and it wasn’t the right one for them. They had no options.
– How could they know for sure if that stylist had experience, was certified, and knew what they were doing? Extensions are expensive & can cause damage if done improperly!
– Prices were all over the place & it was hard to compare. Other extension stylists use a complicated equation to figure out how much the extensions would cost – and it would change every time. ⠀
THAT’S why Crown Salon & Extension Studio exists – Jenna took all of this feedback and turned it into a salon that you can trust for all of your extension needs.

We get asked a lot if we offer “hand-tied” extensions and I thought I would take a moment to explain what that really means, what a lot of people think it means, and why we do what we do here at Crown Salon. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
What most people think “hand-tied” is: The method where your stylist takes a whole track of hair and attaches it using a row of beads to your natural hair. This creates a clip-in extension type look which gives you tons of volume and fullness right away. It gets it’s name because you “hand-tie” the extensions to the hair using a needle and thread. ⠀⠀⠀
What it is really is: “Hand-tied” only refers to the TYPE of hair weft used, NOT the method. There are a lot of hair extension brands out there that make wefts using hair that is literally tied by hand to the weft. This makes it super, super light. So a lot of women who could not have this method before because their hair was too thin are now told that they can have “hand-tied” wefts. There are certain advantages to wearing a hand-tied weft because some extensions foundations require this type of weft for example. So while it is not something we currently offer, as we explore more new options for extensions we may begin adding hand-tied to our suite of services.
Why we use Machine-Tied Wefts:
Strength, durability and fullness. While we have nothing against hand-tied wefts, but because we offer 5 different types of extensions we find there are tons of better options out there for women with fine hair than a weft for the time being. We love to use machine-tied wefts for our weft extensions because machine-tied wefts are thick, strong and give TONS of fullness to already thick hair.
Waterfall Beaded Row Extensions: This is our owner, Jenna’s, favorite method to wear because she already has thick hair she just likes to have the extra length. Instead of having multiple rows of extensions in an individual method women who wear a beaded weft can enjoy just a few rows but have the look of wearing a full head of clip-in extensions with a lot more wearability and comfort. We use the waterfall beaded row foundation that lasts 5-8 weeks with no slipping, combined with the fullness and strength of Bellami’s machine-tied weft extensions for a thick, full look. ⠀⠀⠀

The world of hair extensions can be quite daunting.
There are thousands of brands, dozens of methods & hairstylists claiming to be the best — and if you’re new to the extension world, it can be so easy to get overwhelmed.
At Crown Salon, it is important to us that you are fully educated before jumping into the world of hair extensions. It is so important to do your research because the health of your hair (and not to mention your pocketbook!) is at stake.
This leads us to a very important first step in your hair extension journey:
This is by far the most important step in the whole extension process
It’s very important that we get to see your hair in person, in it’s natural state. This way we can determine a few very important things:
- If you are a good candidate for hair extensions based on the length of your existing hair, health, and density.
- What method would be best for you based on the density of your hair.
- What colors we need to blend to give you your perfect match.
It’s also the perfect time for us to discuss maintenance, at home care, and of course, price.
This is the best time to get every single hair extension question you can think of out on the table.
If you decide hair extensions are right for you, then on to step 2!
It is important to us that we help you understand the financial commitment of hair extensions so you can be fully prepared.
Before we are able to schedule your extension appointment, a deposit will be required. We do this for two reasons: Firstly, because we often need to order your hair for you before your hair appointment. Secondly, we will need to set aside a significant amount of time aside for your extension appointment and this time must be secured with a deposit.
Along with your deposit, you will sign a deposit form & hair extension waiver. To view this in advance you may do so here: Hair Extension Waiver
When you arrive for your appointment we hope you are excited — it’s extension day!
Don’t worry about coming with clean hair — we will wash it and dry it for you to ensure we have a completely clean surface before starting. Your hair will also most likely be out and ready for you. At this point, your hairstylist will go over any last minute questions you may have and recap what you discussed during your consultation.
Before we get started, we will likely ask for your permission to take a “before” photo.
We do this because it’s so fun for you to see the results side by side — and we love to share them to our social media pages. If you don’t feel comfortable taking photos that’s totally fine! It’s completely optional.
After your hair has been shampooed and blown out, we are ready for the next step!
- We section your hair into a clean parting and we remove the sticky backing of the medical grade adhesive – we then apply this about 1/8-1/4 inch away from your scalp by sliding it down the hair strands from the part.
- When applied, the medical grade adhesive will pick up the perfect amount of your natural hair. We lift it up and clean up the section before usually applying a second piece of the tape to the back to create a “sandwich”. Sometimes we use a single-sided method and will not apply a second piece, just a piece of backing adhesive to hold it in place.
- We use light pressure to ensure that the adhesive is snugly attached and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. We do this in strategic sections being careful to leave the appropriate amount of space is kept away from your hairline so that you won’t have any extensions showing while wearing your hair up or down.
Once your extensions are in but are not yet blended, you might be wondering what you got yourself into.
Your new hair extensions don’t look quite right. Don’t worry — we are just about to get to the most technical (and vital) step in making your extensions look like your own: the blending.
We have a wide range of tools and tricks in our arsenal to blend your hair extensions, and this is where we see the most mistakes made by other stylists.
If hair extensions are not properly blended they can stick out and make your new, added hair look obvious (improper color-matching will also cause this issue).
Once your hair has been perfectly blended, it’s time to show you how to style your new extensions!
You may love your hair in a more natural state after your blending, but it’s also fun to try something new.
Your Crown stylist will offer to do something a little extra special with your styling and teach you how to use a curling wand, flat iron, curling iron or hot rollers to style your new extensions while recommending the best products to take care of your extensions.
If we got before photos, we definitely need to get some cute afters!
Have fun, be yourself, and let us snap some photos of your gorgeous new extensions!
